Multimedia Principles

Read, Watch, Listen, Multitask, what is Multimedia Journalism?

Notes from Deuze’s “What is multimedia journalism.”

The literature on multimedia is expanding quickly. Literature has many different meanings to many different people.  The ownership and news work part of journalism is increasing into being a major part of contemporary journalism. This occurs through practice, education, and research.

  •  What many people wonder about is the process of ongoing changes of multimedia and journalism, and how that impacts the practice and self-perception of journalists. Also how this process shapes and influences the rise of professional identity of Multimedia Journalism.  ( 140)
  • The research taken by many different countries brought forth that there is a contemporary use of multimedia projects and processes in some new organizations. The projects and organizations tend to reproduce existing journalistic practices and culture. (141)
  •   Online journalism is not the same as multimedia journalism. (141)
  •  The convergent multimedia advantages are structured and varied by medium to medium, and organization to organization. (142)
  •   There are many different media formats becoming more and more standard. This is because of the transition to digital and the exchange to “widowing” of multimedia content. This in turn makes it less problematic. As far as presentations the content is more sophisticated and easier to understand because of the WYSIWYG “What you see is what you get”. (145)

The mainstream of multimedia

Notes on Achtermans “introduction of multimedia in the mainstream.

Multimedia is referenced to content; it uses a combination of different content forms. This includes text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity. Multimedia is also displayed by electronic and computerized devices.

  •   The nation’s new coverage is mainly produced by print, radio, and television. (1)
  •   A new world began to evolve through visual story telling. This change gave us an opportunity to adapt and to form too many different media types, and to share a very impactful story.  (3)
  •   Ethical reporting, trustworthy sourcing, and solid story telling are the tradition conventions of journalism. These are just as important in multimedia presentations as they are traditional distribution. (4)
  •   Approaches of traditional journalism is through story telling it’s a showcase of the talents. For instance a photographer capturing a critical moment, and a radio reporter having the perfect sound. (7)
